Haiti

Today at the shop the guys were talking about all the relief efforts and money being sent to Haiti. Several of them was of the opinion that we shouldn't do nothing.

They claim that the reason there was such a high death count is due to overpopulation and overcrowding in the slums and that is a direct result from people not taking care of themselves.

I cannot argue with their point but they seem to be a little cold toward helping out fellow human beings. One guy even claimed that this is natures way of culling the herd so there won't be so many people draining the system so some may survive. Damn he has a cold heart.

I don't know if they are right or not but i do know that i don't mind our military being there and helping out and i don't mind sending a few dollars to help them out as well. I don't think we need to support Haiti especially when we have similar poverty situations here in our own country. I do believe that as human beings, we are obligated to help them rescue the victims and get clean water back into the country.

I also don't think our government should send them money. Correct me if i am wrong but i do not see anywhere in the Constitution where the government has the right to send money anywhere if that check is drawn on the treasury. The only way for them to do that is for congress to pass a law that says they can and that in itself is wrong.

What are your thoughts on this subject?

Thoreau's point of view was that if people had less taxes, they'd feel free to donate to causes they believed in. It's been a lot of years since I read his writing, but if I'm not mistaken, he believed that wars and charities should be supported strictly by private donations. Wouldn't that be a nice way of handling things? Incidentally, conservatives, who want less taxes, tend to give a MUCH higher percentage of their income to charity. Just because we don't want tax dollars being legislated to charity doesn't mean that we are cold and uncharitable. We just want to choose where our dollars go. Fair enough, in my opinion.
